Tools for you
Practical tools for understanding your leadership, influence, boundaries, power and workplace experience.
Emplify brings together people who believe empathic people should have more credibility, influence and power, and want to help make that happen.
The leadership problem
Those who run things typically act from self-interest, and seldom consider others.
Trust in leadership is falling sharply worldwide.
The best leaders combine strong vision and drive with a consideration for the people around them.
But you can’t train someone to care.
You cannot train someone to care. Emplify is about finding the people who already do.
Mission
We want to address the inequalities of what society values. We call this the Taker Economy: a world that rewards taking, not giving. That codes kindness as feminine and feminine as weak.
We want politicians and chief executives to acknowledge that kindness is not a weakness.
We want organisations to find and promote their empathic people
Empathic people have been side-lined by the ones who do hold power - they earn less and are promoted less often than their more self-interested colleagues.
We want empathic people to stand up for what they believe in. We want them to stop avoiding power and to accept that power in their hands is a force for good.
We want everyone to realise that someone who is compassionate can also be a credible leader.
This is urgent. It’s not going to happen by waiting around. It needs a movement of people who care.
Emplify offers a supportive community for empathic people to make this happen.
It provides the tools that they need in order to become empathy-powered leaders.
Good people should have more power.
Emplify is here to make that possible.
What is Emplify?

The case
The psychology behind The Super-Helper Syndrome informs Emplify’s thinking about leadership, credibility, influence and organisational practice.

Where some of the thinking began
Jess Baker & Rod Vincent

Published in 2022, the book offers a new perspective on the psychology of helping, how empathy is a disposition not everyone shares, and how you need to care for yourself as well as you care for others.
“This book is a game changer”
“This book will change the way you think, feel and act - all for the better”
“This book is an essential read for anyone working in health or social care”
Manifesto
The world is dominated by self-serving, competitive people. Some of them are even saying empathy is toxic. Emplify believes the opposite — that empathic people are what the world needs most right now.
Empathic people (like you) say they don’t like power. But power in your hands would be a force for good.
We are creating a haven from the narcissist’s agenda. It’s a space for human kindness.

In 2008, after a volunteering placement working in a local school and orphanage in Darjeeling, Sharan co-founded Darjeeling Children’s Trust with fellow volunteers she met on that trip. As a trustee of the UK-registered charity, she has spent two decades improving access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children in Darjeeling and the surrounding area.
She organises fundraising events, helps raise the trust’s profile, sets its strategic direction, and interviews and selects volunteers travelling to Darjeeling. Sharan also helps manage the trust’s child sponsorship programme, which enables children from disadvantaged families, and those living in the orphanage, to attend fee-paying school. Alongside this, Sharan volunteers with Breaking Barriers, supporting refugees to build the knowledge and confidence they need to secure stable, fulfilling employment. As an Emplify Founding Fellow, Sharan brings this grounded, hands-on experience of leadership, strategy, and care in action to the programme, living proof of what Empathy-Powered Leadership looks like when good people are given the power, and the platform, to use it well.
I would like to use my ‘I can help’ and ‘I want to sort other people’s problems’, ‘I am responsible for others problems’ attitude to my advantage, to help other empathic people to have greater influence in this world.

Louise is the award-winning author behind the bestselling Thrown Away Children series. Her brand-new series, Slave Girls, continues her mission to share the real, often unheard stories of children and young people, with courage, honesty and hope. Louise now works alongside Dr Sally-Anne Tommy, a leading voice in trauma responsiveness. Louise also co-hosts Foster Care Uncovered with Sarah Anderson, a podcast that sits in the top 10% most listened to globally.
Louise founded Spark Sisterhood, a community where girls from care were met with friendship and essential life and employment skills, encouraged to believe in themselves and their futures. Having grown up in care and now fostering children herself, Louise understands the care system from the inside out, giving her a unique 360° understanding. She is a respected and leading voice, and her work is now focused on changing the conversation around fostering and adoption in the UK, challenging the fear-led culture, the lack of collaboration between agencies, and the reliance on legislation to drive change. Instead, she’s advocating for honest dialogue, practical solutions, and a shared commitment to putting children and carers first. At the heart of everything Louise does is a belief in the power of real-life stories. Through the marketing agency, We Are Louise, she helps founders, charities, and mission-led companies connect more deeply with their audiences through branding, content, and campaigns that are built with empathy and purpose. Whether it’s supporting a small charity or reshaping how we talk about foster care, We Are Louise brings clarity, heart and strategy to every project. Louise now works alongside Dr Sally-Anne Tommy, a leading voice in trauma responsiveness. Together they’ve combined their skills and knowledge to create the Nine Colours of the Nervous System, a training programme for anyone who works with children and young people, helping them understand how our nervous systems really work. It’s built to be done once: powerful, practical and easy to understand, giving carers and professionals a lasting shift in how they see and respond to the children in their care. Louise also co-hosts Foster Care Uncovered with Sarah Anderson, a podcast that sits in the top 10% most listened to globally. Together they talk openly about the realities of fostering, from recruitment and culture to the systemic pressures carers face every day, bringing the same honesty to audio that Louise brings to her books.

Katy is Founder & Principal of SOSA Dance, Seated SOSA Dance, Simply SOSA Dance, Director of Dance SOSA Community Interest Company. She’s also supporting her community as Chairperson of Barnston Village Hall.
Katy’s life-long passion for dance knows no bounds! Her dream is to inspire people all over the world, regardless of their age or level of ability, to experience the pure joy and happiness that dance brings.
I am a true believer that leadership starts with empathy and kindness towards others. Being a leader, in a position of power, is not having the ability to assert control and superiority over others, but the ability to bring people together and ensure everyone feels equally valued. Acting with integrity and empathy is a superpower.

Alison received an MBE for Services to Nursing in 2018. Alison held the position of Chair and Trustee for the Society of Tissue Viability (formerly the Tissue Viability Society / TVS) from 2011-2013. She has a number of publications, is a national and international speaker and launched the Accelerate Treatment Centre as the first Centre of Excellence for complex leg ulcers and lymphoedema care in September 2015.
Having started and led my own community interest corporation I understand what leading with empathy feels like; the challenges that comes with it, and the brilliant ripple effect it has, not just for the team but for the patients and clinical success. I'm a Founding Fellow of Emplify because I believe that a world with more good people in positions of power will be a world that serves us all.

I want to be part of a movement that makes things happen. Single voices role-modelling great leadership are fine, they're brilliant. But the amplification of a movement like Emplify is where real magic happens. The Fellowship, by its very nature, is a cohort of like-minded, like-valued people. For me personally, it's also a time to give back, and to do that as part of a collective of amplified voices, rather than on my own, as I've tried to do throughout my career, often in very difficult personal circumstances. Being a fellow means I've found my tribe.
Empathy without power changes very little.
Power without empathy can cause enormous damage.
Great leadership needs both.
